My son put his exploration cap on this morning, giving my daughter and me some girly bonding time. Being in the throws of teenage hood, we don’t always see eye to eye and it would be fair to say that we’re not always each other’s favourite people. But then, sometimes we are.
Today I am reminded how lucky I am to be stepmom to this delightful child. She was 4 years old when we met for the first time, 12 years ago – cute as a button with no front teeth. Today she is a beautiful, confident, kind young lady, with all her front teeth firmly in tact, thank goodness.
I can comfortably mention in the same breath that being a stepmom is the hardest thing I’ve EVER done, but equally so the most gratifying. I see the people that they have become and my heart swells with pride.
What I love about this kid is her kindness, her generous heart, her quick wit, the way she finds the humour in every situation, her quirky style and of course her love for something sweet. Letting me in is the biggest gift she could ever give me – sharing her thoughts and ideals, opinions and feelings.
It is important to take time for a good old catch up with those you love and cherish. Fleeting moments present themselves in the everyday routine, but the real magic comes alive when you press pause.
My darling, I love you so much and am so grateful that you let me in. Thank you for being you.
