Receiving a compliment is one of those awkward things – you feel really flattered and special, but at the same time, you feel the need to play it down so that you don’t seem full of yourself or arrogant.
Today I received a lovely compliment from a lady I don’t know from a bar of soap. I did the usual brushing it off and thanked her awkwardly, to which she responded that she made a new year’s resolution to let people know whenever she thinks they deserve to know they’re amazing.
I thought this was beautiful – because we often see a nice-looking dress, or hairstyle, or think someone is lovely, but we rarely would let a stranger know such a thing. And being on the receiving end of a flattering remark does wonders for the spirit.
I decided to follow in her footsteps – when someone deserves a compliment in my view, I will happily share it with them. Equally, if someone is kind enough to share a compliment with me, I will look them in the eye and fully embrace it – letting them know that I really appreciate them taking the time to be so generous.
